Can You Access Moraine Lake by Car?

Yes, you can access Moraine Lake by car, but new rules as of 2023 may allow only shuttle or restricted access to Moraine Lake at times. The lake is accessible by a scenic mountain road known as Moraine Lake Road.

Moraine Lake Seasonal Accessibility

Moraine Lake Road typically opens for vehicle access from mid to late June and remains open until late September or early October, depending on weather conditions. The exact opening and closing dates can vary each year, so it's a good idea to check the current road conditions and availability before planning your trip.

Moraine Lake Parking

Moraine Lake is a popular destination, and the parking lot at the lake can fill up quickly, especially during peak times and weekends. To secure a parking spot and avoid disappointment, it's best to arrive early in the morning or later in the afternoon.

Moraine Lake Shuttle Service

During the peak summer months, shuttle services run from Calgary, Banff or Lake Louise to Moraine Lake. The Moraine Lake shuttles are designed to help manage traffic and reduce congestion in the area. If the parking lot at Moraine Lake is full, visitors can park at the Park and Ride area near Lake Louise and take the shuttle to Moraine Lake.

Moraine Lake Restricted Access

Private vehicles may not be allowed on Moraine Lake Road during Summer visitation times due to traffic congestion as of 2023. In such cases, visitors must use the shuttle services from Calgary, Banff or Lake Louise.

Winter Closure

In the winter months, typically from October to June, Moraine Lake Road is closed to vehicle traffic due to heavy snowfall and hazardous driving conditions. However, during the winter, visitors can still access Moraine Lake by cross-country skiing or snowshoeing along the road.
